In April 1997, J. R. Murphy and John M. Grantland left the firm of Sweeny, Wingate, Murphy & Barrow to form the law firm of Murphy & Grantland, P.A. The two attorneys, along with paralegal Marybeth Powers, began the firm in a spare office at a business owned by Mr. Murphy's brother-in-law with a borrowed home computer, a single phone and one desk. From that humble beginning, the firm moved to offices on Forest Drive. J. R.'s wife's aunt, Sue Gunter, came to answer the phones on moving day and has stayed as firm bookkeeper. Within a year the firm had more than doubled its client base and workload. |

In July 1998, the firm welcomed the addition of attorney Ronald B. Diegel to its growing practice. The firm continued to be blessed with successful results in their endeavors for their growing client base in and out of the courtroom, and in June of 2000 attorney Anthony W. Livoti joined the firm. By this time Murphy & Grantland, P. A. had outgrown its office space on Forest Drive and moved to a new location at 2110 Beltline Boulevard. In 2001 E. Ray Moore and Adam J. Neil joined the firm. During 2002, the firm welcomed Brent M. Boyd into its family. The firm has continued its success and growth and as such in 2003 added Charles G. Blackburn, and in 2005, Tom Andrews was added to the growing team. Once again, we outgrew our space on Beltline and have moved to our current location at 4406-B Forest Drive.
In early 2006, the firm welcomed Peter Farr and Timothy Newton, associates to the firm. Jeffrey C. Kull, formerly a law clerk for the Honorable Dennis Shedd of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, joined the firm. Then, in late 2006, the firm welcomed Chris Majure into its construction practice.
The firm was also disappointed but proud to learn that William (Bill) Connor would be mobilized as part of the War on Terror. Bill will be deployed with South Carolina’s 218th Infantry Brigade in the largest deployment of South Carolina soldiers overseas during the War on Terror. The 218th Infantry Brigade will be deployed to Afghanistan, where Bill will help advise the Afghan National Army infantry and combat operations.
During these years Murphy & Grantland, P.A. has been fortunate to hire support staff whose abilities and dedication have helped create the quality work product and results our clients have come to expect of us. A firm is only as good as its people and Murphy & Grantland, P.A. prides itself on the quality of its employees. The firm now represents a number of clients including Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company, Zurich America Insurance Company, USAA Insurance, The Hartford, Harleysville Mutual Insurance Company, Progressive Insurance Companies, PMA Insurance Group, Piggly Wiggly Carolina Company, Inc. and many other insurance companies and self-insured businesses.
